Altered Art-Butterfly Purse

By Peggie Wilkins
Rubber Roadsters
Advanced Stamping Team Designer

I won this purse at Target for getting people to sign up for credit cards, but I know there are other plain canvas purses out there.  Being an artist, I could hardly leave a plain surface plain!  So, off I went to my studio to stamp, color, and craft a beautiful butterfly and heart purse.  Although I wouldn’t recommend washing this purse, the designs and color are not going to come off it the purse gets wet.

Supplies:
Canvas Purse (Target prize)
Butterfly Swirls Stamp Set (The Angel Company)
Heart Stamp (The Angel Company)
Fiore Stamp (The Angel Company)
Swirl Stamp (The Angel Company)
Noir Black Palette Inkpad (make sure it has fresh ink in it)
Sharpie Ultrafine Point
VersaMagic Inkpads: (Tsukineko)
    Pink Petunia
    Purple Hydrangea
    Mango Madness
    Persimmon
    Turquoise Gem
    Red Magic
    Aloe Vera
    Ocean Depth
Crystal Stickles (Ranger)
#2 Stipple Brush
Iron
1 ¼ yards Heart trim
Sewing Machine
Thread
Hand needle
Hot glue gun
Yellow silk flower (Prisma)
Large rhinestone
Brass basket charm
Brass heart charm
Silver heart button
½ yards of ¼” pink organza ribbon cut in two

Instructions:

1.      Stamp the butterflies and swirls as shown in photo with the noir black inkpad pressing very firmly. If any of the design doesn’t show up as well as you would like, use a permanent ink Sharpie and go over those places.

2.      Stamp the fiore, heart and small swirl stamps as shown in photo.

3.      Using the stipple brush and the mango madness VersaMagic inkpad apply color to all the swirls. Next, use the persimmon VersaMagic inkpad and apply more ink down the just center of the swirls.

4.      Apply the various VersaMagic inks to the butterflies and fiore and heart stamps as shown.

5.      Edge the purse with Ocean Depth VersaMagic.

6.      Put the iron on the hottest setting and iron over everything for at least ten seconds in each spot to heat set.

7.      Apply Stickles in lines over the butterflies, heart, and fiores.

8.      Make random swirls with the Stickles over the existing swirls.

9.      Let dry for several hours.

10.  Sew heart trim on handle using sewing machine.

11.  Sew silver heart button over stamped heart with hand needle and thread.

12.  Hot glue flower in place and then glue the rhinestone in the middle of the flower.

13.  Cut off pull tabs on purse.

14.  Tie the brass charms on with organza ribbon and trim ribbon ends.
