Altered CD: Christmas Ornament

By M. Elizabeth Lee

Making Christmas ornaments year round is a hobby of mine since childhood.  Amaze your friends with these stunning ornaments as gifts to treasure year after year.  Do you sometimes need a gift in a hurry? These gems make up in snap!  This project was designed for crafters who can’t resist purchasing stickers and need to start utilizing their stockpiles!  In addition to Christmas, ornaments can be made for any season or occasion.

Supplies:
Embossed Christmas Stickers (K & Company)
3D Joy Sticker- Collage Grand Adhesions (K & Company)
2-Sheets 6” x 6” Scrapbook Designer Papers (K & Company)
Recycled CD
2-3/16” Satin Metallic Gold Eyelets (We R Memory Keepers)
Crop-a-dial (We R Memory Keepers)
Green Fashion Two (Phentex)
Mechanical Pencil G2-05 (Pilot)
Scissors
Xyron 500 Machine
Bone Folder (Ranger)
Optional: Mod Podge (Plaid Enterprises)
Foam Brush (Jen Mfg.)

Instructions:

1.  Using the CD as a template, trace 2 circles on the back side of each patterned paper.  Cut out paper circles with scissors or a circle cutter.

2.  Run paper circles through Xyron machine.  Place paper circles side face down onto work surface.  Burnish the back side of the adhesive with fingers or a bone folder.

3.  Remove the adhesive backing from the paper circles and attach to the front and back of the CD.

4.  Make a hole and set an eyelet at both the top and bottom of the CD.

5.  Attach the dry embossed Christmas sticker to the CD referring to photo and burnish with fingertips.

6.  Attach the Joy word sticker to the center of the Christmas Sticker.

7.  For a lasting ornament, apply 2-3 coats of Mod Podge to the surface of the stickers using a foam brush.  Allow thorough drying between coats.  Wash brush with soap and water when finished.

8.  Cut a desired length of fiber and run through the top hole for a hanging thread.

9.  Cut 6 strands of fibers and fold in half.  Thread the folded sides of the yarn through the bottom hole (using tweezers if needed) and tie a larkshead knot for a tassel effect.  Trim ends as desired.

10. To make a larkshead knot:

     1)  Feed the folded ends of the fibers through the loop going in through the front hole and out the back about an
          inch or two.

2)  Feed all the lose ends of the fibers through the loops (as one whole) and pull tight.
