Altered CD Border Mat

By Cindi Bisson
Hot Rod Scrampers
Advanced Scramping Team Designer

Kids do the craziest things sometimes, and this framed layout
highlights one of our boys silliest moments.  While wearing
their old “pirate clothes” from a Halloween costume, they
decorated the Christmas tree and danced all around the room
shaking their tails.  It was all too funny which prompted me to
grab the camera and make it a lasting memory!

I prefer PreserveIt frames when I want to display my pages
because they include a special 5 sided UV Plexiglas cube to
allow for raised embellishments & accents while keeping my
artwork safe for generations to come. I also like the over-
sized 15x15” size which allows me to almost always use a
full 12x12” layout with an accent mat, rather than just
framing the layout itself.  All materials are acid & lignin free
and the result is gallery quality framing!

CDs could be used to create a unique frame for any layout.  Just use fewer CD’s, cut them “smaller” rather than just in
half, and make your layout to fit inside the remaining area.

Supplies:

Musical notes rubber stamp (The Stamping Studio)
Noir Black Palette inkpad (Stewart Superior)
Vintage Photo Distress inkpad (Ranger Industries)
Memory frame with mat “Green & Red” 15”x15” (PreserveIt)
Patterned paper (BasicGrey Blitzen Collection)
Pewter Christmas tree brads (Making Memories)
Red & green cardstock (Paper Accents)
Chipboard letters (Cosmo Cricket)
Asphalt black scrapbook paint (Making Memories)
Red & green ribbon (May Arts)
Wooden alphabet tiles (Stanislaus Imports)
CDs
E-6000 Adhesive
Craft & Bond Glue (Elmer’s)

Instructions:

1.      Remove mat backing from PreserveIt frame packaging.  This will be the mat for the CD border.

2.      Use scissors to cut 6 CD’s in half.

3.      Arrange 3 CD halves on each outside edge of the white mat, overlapping at corners.  Use E-6000 Adhesive to mount.

4.      Arrange red & green ribbon around outside edge of CD’s to create a colorful border.  Mount with E-6000.

5.      Cut 1x1” squares from patterned paper.  Add metal Christmas tree brad to center of each.  Use E-6000 to mount to
bottom right and top left corners of frame (covering the place where the red and green portions of the frame meet).

6.      Ink musical notes stamp with black ink, stamp on either side of corner embellishment as shown in photo.

7.      Select chipboard letters to spell out part of title (I chose “rockin’”).  Paint chipboard letters with black scrapbook
paint and allow to dry.

8.      Measure open space inside frame (will vary if your frame is not 15x15”). Cut a square of red cardstock and a square
of green cardstock approximately 9x9”.

9.      Ink edges with Distress ink.

10.    Mount red square in open space near the green painted portion of the frame.  Mount the green square overlapping
red square in the red painted portion of the frame. I used Craft & Bond glue.

11.    Cut a piece of patterned paper approximately 9x9”.  Ink edges with Distress ink.

12.    Mount in center of frame so red & green cardstock create a thin outside edging.

13.    Select photos.  Cut red mat for larger photo, ink edges with Distress ink.  Cut green mats for smaller photos, ink
edges with Distress ink.

14.    Arrange and mount photos as desired (I used Craft & Bond glue).

15.    Cut a small strip of red cardstock (approximately 1x2 ½”).  Ink edges with Distress ink.

16.    Add 3 metal Christmas tree brads to strip.  Mount between smaller photos.

17.    I chose to mount my title lettering on the side rather than horizontally.  Adhere painted chipboard lettering to spell
out title (I used Craft & Bond glue).

18.    Use wooden tile letters to spell out remainder of the title and mount with E-6000 adhesive.

19.    Ink musical notes stamp with black ink and stamp above and beneath title lettering.

20.    Cut a piece of red & green ribbon approximately 10” long; adhere with Craft & Bond glue between title and main
photo.

21.    Finish by adding the UV Plexiglas cube, matt board, and mount according to package instructions.
