Clay Imprints

By Nancy Leimer
Rubber Roadsters
Advanced Stamping Team Designer

Using rubber stamps for clay imprints can give you an endless assortment of designs.  Every stamp you have can make jewelry, cards or scrapbooking embellishments.

 Supplies:

  • Giraffe Stamps (PSX)

  • Buttercup Ink Pad (CTMH)

  • Oak Brown Ink Pad (CTMH)

  • Indian Corn Blue Ink Pad (CTMH)

  • Pepperwood Cardstock – 8 ½” x 11” (CTMH)

  • White Glossy Cardstock – 8 ½” x 11”

  • Buttercup Marker (CTMH)

  • Desert Sand Marker (CTMH)

  • Brilliant Yellow marker (Marvy)

  • Suede Marker (Marvy)

  • 977 Brown Marker (Tombow)

  • Green Marker (Marvy)

  • Black Marker (CTMH)

  • Gold Pen (Jimmie Gel)

  • Black Pen (Pilot Razor Point)

  • Air Dry Clay (Makin’s Clay)

  • Blue Thread Embellishments (On the Surface)

  • Cream & Brown Thread (Unknown)

  • Assorted Beads (Darice)

  • Blue Beads (Blue Moon)

  • Wood Pieces: 1 yellow, 1 turquoise (Stationery Pick-Ups)

  • Personal Paper Trimmer (Fiskars)

  • Rubber Brayer (Speedball)

  • Diamond Glaze – used as glue (JudiKins)

  • Fine Sandpaper

 Instructions:

  1. Roll clay to 1/8 inch thick. Place the rolled out clay on the rubber side of the stamp and press into rubber. Press clay down around the rubber being sure that all of the design is in the clay. Once all the design is in the clay, press clay along the sides of the rubber causing it to cut the clay. Remove the excess clay. Press the side of the clay on the rubber to make smooth edges. Remove the clay from the rubber and lay on wax paper or aluminum foil to dry.  Check and make sure that all of the design of the stamp has been imprinted into the clay.  If any extra pieces of clay exist, cut with an X-acto knife to remove with design.  Repeat for the second giraffe.  Lay aside to dry.

  2. Cut the glossy cardstock to a square of 4 3/4”.  Cut the Pepperwood cardstock to size 5” x 10”.  Fold in half so that the card will measure 5” x 5”.

  3. Envision being on safari. Think of the blue sky a few sparse trees and lots of sand, dirt and dried weeds.  Roll the brayer lightly in the Indian Corn Blue ink and apply to the top half only of the glossy cardstock. Do not clean the brayer, roll it in the Desert Sand ink and apply to the bottom half of the cardstock. Color over the brown ink about half way up the cardstock with the Buttercup marker going up and down.  Now clean the brayer.

  4. With the clean brayer, use the brown mark and make pseudo tree trunks on the brayer and then roll over the center of the card. Now go back with the green marker and draw some pseudo leaves and roll over the tree trunks. (Trick: If the color is too dark on the cardstock, use a little liquid glue rubbed on the cardstock and then wipe off as much color as you like.) Add color to the edges of the glossy cardstock by using an inked sponge and wipe over the sides.  Then glue in the center of the Pepperwood card.

  5. For each giraffe do the following:

Sand the edges of each to make sure the edges are smooth. Rub the giraffes all over first with the buttercup marker.  Allow to dry, which takes about five minutes. Then rub the tall giraffe’s head and neck with the brilliant yellow and allow to dry. Now, rub small amounts of the desert sand ink all over the giraffes. Use the brown markers to fill in the spots on the giraffes. Also, use the black marker to highlight the tales and hooves. Add eyes and then glue to glossy cardstock.  See picture for position.

  6. Refer to photo with blue threads to create the beaded accent.   Between each bead, tie a 4” piece of blue thread. Add as many beads as fits the design and fray the bottom of the thread. Glue to the upper left corner of the card.  String beads on the brown string adding a small blue bead between each large one and glue to the glossy cardstock. The blue beads and threads help to bring out the blue sky on the card.

  7. The wood pieces are glued to each other and then write Safari with the black marker on the yellow wood piece.  Add small amounts of glue around the yellow wood piece and then add small beads. See photo for position to glue wood to card.

  8. Highlight the giraffes and the safari sign with the gold pen.
