Border Punching

By Lori Ronnerud-Guimond

I’m sure most of you have seen those border punches on the shelves at craft stores.  Are you not sure what to do with them?  As with most craft items, there are a variety of ways to use these handy gadgets.  Here are just a few ideas.  I did one example with a lot of punching and wanted to throw it out, but decided that I should show you what not to do, too.  LOL!

 Flower Sympathy

 Supplies:

  • Charcoal Flowers stamp set (TAC)
  • Rose Sentiments stamp set (TAC)
  • Pearlescent Lavender Brilliance inkpad (Tsukineko)
  • VersaCraft White inkpad (Tsukineko)
  • Heavy white cardstock; ½ Sheet (5½” x 8½”) fold in half
  • Purple cardstock (5½” x 4¼”)
  • Scrap of white cardstock
  • Diamond border punch (Fiskars)
  • Southwest corner punch (Marvy)
  • Mono Adhesive (Tombow)

 Instructions:

1.      Use border punch on one of the landscape (long) sides of the purple cardstock.  I always start in the middle of the paper and work my way out.  Mount this onto a folded cardstock using Mono Adhesive.

2.      Stamp flower with Pearlescent Lavender on scrap of white cardstock.  Trim to fit the image (2⅛“x 3”).  Attach to folded cardstock with Mono Adhesive.

3.      Stamp saying with white ink directly onto the purple cardstock as shown.

Season’s Greetings

 Supplies:

  • Poinsettia stamp set (TAC)
  • Elegant Greetings stamp set (TAC)
  • Encore Ultimate Metallic Gold inkpad (Tsukineko)
  • VersaMark inkpad (Tsukineko)
  • Heavy white cardstock (6¼” x 9¾”) fold in half
  • Red cardstock (5½” x 4¼”)
  • Gold Detail Embossing Powder (Ranger)
  • Masking Magic (Therm-O-Web)
  • Black StazOn ink pad (Tsukineko)
  • Heat tool (Milwaukee)
  • Diamond border punch (Fiskars)
  • Mono Adhesive (Tombow)

 Instructions:

1.      Use border punch on one of the landscape (long) sides of the red cardstock.  I always start in the middle of the paper and work my way out.  This time you don’t want to go all the way off the edge so watch the spacing on the border punch in relation to the edge of the red cardstock.

2.      Stamp the poinsettia image with VersaMark on red cardstock centering it towards the opposite side of the punched border.  Cover with Gold Detail embossing powder.  Heat to melt the embossing powder.

3.      Make a mask of the poinsettia using Black StazOn with the Masking Magic.  Cut exactly on the outside border.  A small detail scissors works best for this.  Place over embossed image.  Stamp poinsettia again just with VersaMark on each side of the masked image and down a little lower.

4.      Stamp saying with Gold ink as shown.  Attach red cardstock to folded white cardstock with Mono Adhesive.

Feel Better Soon

 Supplies:

  • Sea Life stamp set (retired - TAC)
  • Starlight Silver Brilliance inkpad (Tsukineko)
  • Chartreuse Palette Hybrid inkpad (Stewart Superior)
  • Little Tidbits stamp set (TAC)
  • Quick Fillers stamp set (TAC)
  • Sea Blue cardstock; ½ Sheet (5½” x 8½”) fold in half
  • Chartreuse cardstock (5½” x 2½”)
  • Wave border punch (Fiskars)
  • Metal rimmed circle tag (Target)
  • Glue dots (Therm-O-Web)
  • Mono Adhesive (Tombow)

 Instructions:

1.      Use border punch on both long sides of the chartreuse cardstock.  I always start in the middle of the paper and work my way out.  Mount onto folded cardstock using Mono Adhesive.

2.      Stamp circles (from Quick Fillers) with starlight silver on chartreuse cardstock. Stamp rock/seaweed image, little fish and bubbles with starlight silver ink directly onto the folded cardstock in the bottom right corner.

3.      Stamp saying with chartreuse ink directly onto the metal-rimmed circle tag.  Attach to folded cardstock with a glue dot.

Congratulations

Supplies:

  • Congratulations stamp (Impress)
  • VersaMark inkpad (Tsukineko)
  • Heavy white cardstock (5½” x 8½”) fold in half
  • Heavy white cardstock (6” x 3”)
  • Blue Mirror cardstock (5½” x 4¼”)
  • Gold Detail Embossing Powder (Ranger)
  • Heat tool (Milwaukee)
  • Lace border punch (Fiskars)
  • Mono Adhesive (Tombow)

 Instructions:

1.      Use border punch on one of the landscape (long) sides of the blue mirror cardstock.  I always start in the middle of the paper and work my way out.  Do the same on the small piece of white cardstock.

2.      Attach the blue punched piece to the folded cardstock using Mono Adhesive matching the folded side.  Hold up the white punched piece to the blue and determine if there is enough blue showing above & below the white (to your tastes).   Now I tried to offset the different rows of punches so that they didn’t cover each other.  You will need to trim the piece to fit onto the folded card.

3.      Stamp congratulations with VersaMark on small piece of white cardstock centering it. Cover with Gold Detail embossing powder.  Heat to melt the embossing powder with a heat tool.   Now mount this piece on top of the blue & white card.
