Scratch Art

By Elizabeth Lee McAndrew
Trailblazers
Mixed Media Team Designer/Writer

Scratch Art is the magical process of removing a coating that covers a surface to reveal bursts of colorful delight underneath. The effect is often one of a kind, surprising, and awesome. Scratch Art has enjoyed popularity among all age groups for decades. With this recipe, it’s easy to make larges batches of this art surface for stock on hand, too! Bold outline stamps produce the best results.

Supplies:
Present Stamp (Magenta)

VersaMark Ink Pad (Tsukineko)
Olive Pastel Fluid Chalk Ink Pad (Clearsnap)
Lime Pastel Fluid Chalk Ink Pad (Clearsnap)
Lavender Fluid Chalk Ink Pad (Clearsnap)
Orchid Pastel Fluid Chalk Ink Pad (Clearsnap)
Brayer or Sponges
White Glossy Card Stock; cut to size 5 3/8” x 4 1/8”; 5” x 3Ύ”; 4Ύ” x 3Ό”

Lavender Card Stock, cut to size 5Ό” x 4”
White Embossing Powder (Powder Keg)

Grid Cutting Mat for Work Surface (Creative Memories)
16" Cutting System (Genesis)
Personal Paper Trimmer (X-Acto)
Small Ribbon Rose with Leaves for embellishment
Diamond Glaze (Judikins)

Instructions:
1. Make either full or quarter sheets of Scratch art paper. Any extras can be stored and used at a later date. Apply the Fluid Chalk ink to white glossy card stock using a brayer or sponges. For scratch art, I prefer using sponges for each color used. Start at the bottom of the card and work towards the top. Pick up Olive Pastel and sponge onto the bottom portion of the card stock. Next, Layer on the Lime Pastel and pat blend where the two green colors meet. Pick up the Lavender color, pat it next to the Lime Pastel, and pat blend where the two colors meet. Pick up the Orchid Pastel color, pat it next to the Lavender, and pat blend were the two colors meet. Speed dry with a heat tool.

2. Moving out of doors for this next step, completely cover the colored glossy white card stock with flat black spray paint. Allow to dry thoroughly.

3. While the scratch art surfaces are dying, create a background piece to use in layering. Ink up the Swirls background image with VersaMark and stamp on the Lavender card stock creating a watermark effect. Set aside to dry.

4. Ink up the Present stamp with a VersaMark ink pad and stamp directly onto the black spray painted surfaces.

5. Sprinkle on white embossing powder by Powder Keg, shake off excess, and return to container. Melt the embossing powder with a heat tool.

6. Slip the pen nib into a pen holder to use as a scratch art tool. Refer to photo and scratch out any area to reveal the underlying color. The black paint will remove easily. Cut to finished size: 4Ύ” x 3Ό” and set aside.

7. Using Mono Adhesive, layer and attach the elements of design in the following order. Layer the Scratch Art design to white glossy cardstock. Layer this element onto the Lavender background. Attach this section to a layer of white glossy cardstock. Finally, attach this entire stacked section to the front of the black folded card.

8. Glue the Ribbon Rose onto the present with Diamond Glaze.
