Instructions:

Photograph Preparation – Select a photograph to use.  Instead of printing the photograph on photo paper try printing it on a medium weight vanilla or ivory cardstock.  Leave a border around the image so you can distress the edges.  Tear the edges around the image and color with the inks.  Apply some ink to the photograph too. In this project the aim was to achieve a rustic look to enhance the feeling of the Kamalaht Paper Collection.  When you are done distressing the edges, add the metal paper clips to the opposite corners.  Photo Sizes: 3⅛”x3¼” and 3¼”x4¾”.

 Prepare the Journal -

1.      Gesso the front and back cover of the Composition Book.  Let dry.  Gesso the inside front and back covers.

2.      Paint the cover and inside with the FolkArt Tapioca Paint.  Let dry.

3.      Use the Thatched Straw, Amber Clay, Ochre, Cocoa and Burnt Umber inks to give a Rustic Chic Look to the book.  Add a touch of distressing.

4.      Cut all papers to the sizes specified above and group according to color groups.  Mark the groups with Post-It Sticky Notes:  Gold, Patterned paper, Blue, and Red.

The Cover -

1.      Glue the plain gold paper measuring 6¾”x9⅜” to the front cover.

2.      Glue patterned paper measuring 1⅜”x9⅜” to the plain gold background.  Glue the blue piece measuring 6½”x4” over the patterned strip.  It should be 3½” down and next to the binding.

3.      Take the Blue strip measuring 6¾”x1½” and stamp the saying “Art Is” with the Open Chunky Uppers using the Burnt Umber Palette Pad.  Distress the edges with cocoa and burnt umber inks.  Let dry and glue in place ½” from the top and ⅛” from the side of the book.

4.      Place the patterned strip measuring 1¾”x7⅝” in front of you.  Take the blue strip measuring 7”x1” and adhere the metal letters saying “a journey” to the blue paper.  Distress the paper edges with the gold and brown inks. Glue the blue to the patterned paper. Glue this on the blue paper leaving a spot for the mounted photograph.

5.      Using the distress photograph you have prepared, mount it on the red piece of paper measuring 3¼”x4⅜”.  Be sure you have attached the metal paper clips at this point.

6.      Stamp “create everything” on the blue strip measuring 3½”x½”.  Trim closely to the letters with the exacto knife.  Distress with the burnt umber ink.  Glue to the journal cover.

7.      Make the paper sticker-like embellishment.  Stamp a “Creative Genius Figure” on the scrap of gold cardstock and trim around it with the scissors.  Distress with the inks and then glue to the front of journal.

The cover is finished.

Back Cover of Journal -

1.      Using the tag, stamp the words Dream, Imagine, Aspire and Explore from the Live Inspired set using the Burnt Umber Ink. When the ink is dry, tie the ribbon on the tag. Set aside.  Hint: To stamp the words on the tag line them up in order on an acrylic mount and stamp on tag.

2.      Glue the printed gold paper measuring 6¾”x9⅝” to the back cover of the journal.

3.      Measure down 4 ½” from the binding and glue on the patterned paper measuring 6½”x4” to the gold background.

4.      Add the metal paper clips to the photo edges in the opposite corners and glue the photograph to the red paper measuring 3⅝”x5⅛”.

5.      Measuring down 2¼” and ⅛” in from the journal’s edge, glue the patterned paper measuring 6½”x4” over the gold background.

6.      Glue mounted photograph on top of patterned paper ¾” down and ⅝” in from the edge.

7.      Glue blue strip on top of the patterned paper ⅛” down from the top and ⅝” from the binding.

8.      Glue blue strip measuring 6”x1½” ¼” from the edge and 3¼” from the patterned paper and ½” from the binding.

9.      Glue the patterned strip 6¼”x1” over the blue ⅛”, from the top of blue paper and 1/16” from the edge of the journal.

The back of the Journal is finished.  The paper scraps from the project can be used to decorate the inside pages as you do the art journaling or for making another scrapbook creation.
