Altered Coffee Can

By Betti Geis
Crafty Cruisers
Intermediate Stamping Team Designer

This coffee can project consists of altering the outside with joint compound and scrapbook paint.   This project can be used to house a gift!  Merely fill the can with tissue or crinkles and insert gift.  It makes a dandy conversation piece on your counter as well!

Supplies:

•  Rubber Stamps of your choice
•  Plum Scrapbook Paint (Making Memories)
•  Rose Petal Scrapbook paint (Making Memories)
•  Inside lining is constructed with Basic Grey brand cardstock
•  Parchment paper
•  Empty Clean coffee can (with label removed)
•  All Purpose Joint Compound (Home Depot)
•  Dry wall tape - Faux magic Mesh (Home Depot)
•  Molding paste - white (Golden)
•  Fibers-Unknown (Target $1.00 rack)
•  Book Binding glue (Club Scrap)
•  Slide mounts white cardboard (Making Memories)
•  Large craft stick (or tongue depressor)
•  Foam Brush (Michael’s)
•  Sand paper

Instructions:

1.    Spread out the Molding Paste onto Parchment Paper and smear on a thick layer using craft stick.  Let dry overnight for use as an embellishment later.

2.    Take a clean and dry coffee can and apply a layer of all-purpose joint compound with a craft stick all around coffee can. You can create different textures with different strokes or smooth it as much as you like. Let dry overnight.

3.    Paint entire surface of dry coffee can with the Rose Petal scrapbook paint using foam brush; let dry. Give it a distressed look by painting sporadically over the textures with Plum paint. You can sand the paint off if you put too much on.

4.    Cut Mesh tape the circumference of your coffee can and lay it down on parchment paper. Paint or sponge the tape with plum paint; let dry.

5.    Paint nine slide mounts (or however many you need to go all the way around your coffee can) with plum paint. Let dry and sand to distress.

6.    Remove the dry molding paste from the parchment paper, which has become a sheet of textured plastic. Lay this on a flat surface and stamp on it by prepping the images with plum paint.  Stamp the images or words onto the plastic sheet.  Solid stamps work best.

7.    Cut or tear the shapes as desired and adhere to can front with bookbinding glue or tacky glue. (I like bookbinding glue as it grabs quickly).  Cut portions of the plastic in triangles and glue to the top of can to give a bandana effect.

8.    Adhere self-sticking mesh over the bottom edge of the plastic sheet.

9.    Glue the distressed photo mounting slides at an angle around the bottom of the can. Continue all around the can.

10.                       Glue coordinating fibers in between the bandanas. Glue inside the can leaving them to dangle freely.

11.                       Cut the Basic Grey cardstock (or other cardstock of your choosing) to fit the circumference of your coffee can.  Glue to the inside and allow to dry.
