Acetate/Shaker Card

Mary Shoebridge
Crafty Cruisers
Intermediate Stamping Team Designer

I would like to share with you how this card idea developed.  Often, I think we overlook the creative process that our artwork goes through before it reaches the final stage that you see here on RRA.  In this case, I originally had the idea of wanting to stamp on acetate since a stamping friend had shown me this technique. However, I really wanted to give it a new twist so I created a shaker card with the stamped acetate.  I am very fond of window cards and shakers.  In this project, I have combined three card-making ideas:  the use of acetate, shrink plastic, and shaker cards.  The use of permanent ink markers on the acetate is something I have worked with before, and it is an interesting technique to try.

Instructions:

This card is made up of four layers:  The original card 5 1/2” by 5 1/2”, the foam white layer, the butterfly stamped acetate layer and the window opening layer.  The directions and tips for each layer are provided as are tips for making the shrink plastic “Shrinkies” to put inside the shaker.

The foundation card for the shaker

1.    Take the piece of 5 1/2” x 11” pale blue cardstock and fold in half.

2.    Make a window template to use while you are stamping on the bottom card using the template provided.  Cut the template out and trace it on the piece of white cardstock cut 5 1/2” x 5 1/2”.

3.    Mark the window opening on the pale blue cardstock using the template as a mask.  Ink up the saying stamps from the Well Defined Backgrounds Set with the Black Noir Palette Pad and stamp in the opening.  Stamp the butterfly images with the same ink.  Color with the colored pencils.  Brush on some of the Sparkling Star Lite Top Coat to give a glittering effect.  Set the card aside.

The Foam Layer (This is to hold the acetate stamped art above the card back, so the shrinkies will move freely under the acetate.

1.    Cut two pieces 5 1/8” x 5 1/8” from the white foam sheet.

2.    Glue the pieces together using the TACKY glue.  Let dry.

3.    Using the template provided as a guideline, cut an opening 3 7/8” x 3” with the cutting knife cut.  The foam frame is to fit under the window opening.  You can use this method for other shaker cards.  By using the foam, none of the shrinkies inside get stuck.  Take some of the Brilliance Sky Blue Ink and sponge it on the edges of the window opening and around the edges.  This should match the color of the cardstock.  Set aside.  This is an alternative method to using foam core or foam tape in a shaker card.

The Acetate Layer Stamped With Butterflies

1.    Cut a piece of acetate (sometimes called window plastic (Dura-lar) 4 1/2” x 4 3/4”.

2.    Cut a piece of white cardstock the same size.  Using the template, mark the window opening with a pencil.  This is the area that will show when the card is assembled.  Stamp a design with the butterflies from both sets on this paper with the Noir Black Ink.  Clean your stamps.

3.    Place this paper under the Acetate.  Ink up the stamps with the Black Staz On Ink and stamp the images on the Acetate.  Work quickly, stamping all the images, then sprinkle with the Black Diamonds Embossing Powder and heat emboss.  At this step, you have to be very careful not to over heat the plastic and powder.  Hold the heat gun several inches away from the acetate, only until the powder is melted.  If the acetate gets too hot, it will buckle.

4.    After the design is embossed, color on the reverse side with the Prismacolor permanent markers.  These markers match their colors of both regular and watercolor pencils.

5.    When the design is finished, set it aside.

Shrink  Plastic “Shrinkies” Shaker Embellishments

In the process of making this shaker card, it seemed like a good idea to make co-coordinating shrinkies to go inside the shaker.  Here are the instructions for that step.  You could substitute other small butterfly items but this was so much fun and really they get small, but these make the perfect embellishments for a themed shaker.

1.    You can either sand the plastic or leave as it is.  In this case, it was not sanded.  That is optional.

2.    Clean the StazOn Ink off the stamps.  Reink with the Noir Black Palette Ink and stamp as many images as you would like to use inside the shaker.  There are 3 large butterflies, 5 smaller ones and some and flowers from the FlutterBy Set.

3.    Dry the ink with a hair dryer.  This works great for setting the ink and does not shrink the plastic.  Color the images with the colored pencils.  Using the fine tip scissors cut out the images and place them on a non-stick baking sheet.  Preheat your oven and bake them at 250 degrees for 3 to 4 minutes.  Make sure they are completely shrunk.  They are flat when done with no curling edges and very small.

The Window Opening Card Front

1.    Take the Card front that you cut in the beginning 5 1/2” x 5 1/2” and make a window opening following the template provided.  Mark the opening with a pencil and cut it out with the cutting knife.

2.    Ink up the Butterfly images again with the Noir Black Palette Ink and stamp on the window frame.

3.    This is a good time to check to see if the foam layer will be covered with the top layer.  Lay the frame on the foam; the foam should be smaller that the frame and not show.  There should be approximately a 1/8” margin.

4.    Stamp the saying on the window frame.

5.    Color the butterflies with the colored pencils and sponge some of the Brilliance blue, green and violet inks around the images and saying.  Brush some of the Star lite Top Coat on the Butterflies and use some of the Diamond Sparkles around the inside frame edge.

How To Assemble The Shaker Card

1.    Place the foundation card in front of you.  Turn the foam layer over and apply a coat of the thick TACKY glue to the foam.  Turn it over gain and carefully press it into place over the colored design making sure it is centered.

2.    Put the “Shrinkies” card embellishments into the opening in the foam.  Shake it.  They should move around freely.

3.    On the foam, apply another layer of glue and carefully place the acetate layer on top.

4.    Place the card front over the acetate to see where it should be glued.  Spread a thin layer of glue on the edges of the acetate.  Attach the card front.

5.    If you have extra butterflies left you can add them to the card front.
