Scrapbook Painting with Pizzazz

By Betti Geis
Crafty Cruisers
Intermediate Stamping Team Designer

Painted backgrounds create an excellent base for any paper arts project besides scrapbooking.  You will want to make extras to have on hand for use in other crafty ventures.  I have used Memory Makers new Scrapbook Paints that are archival safe for photos.

Supplies:

• Serenity Stamp (Stampin’ Up!)
• Gentle Greetings (Stampin’ Up!)
• Quill Alphabet (Stampin' Up!)
• The Beauty of a Woman (TAC)
• Scrapbook Paint colors- Sky, Asphalt (Memory Makers)
• Starry night Palette inkpad (Stewart Superior)
• Double Square punch (Creative memories)
• Double circle punch (Creative memories)
• Navy Blue card stock
• Ultra Smooth white card stock (TAC)
• Mauve designed scrapbook paper (Provo craft)
• Brayer with foam attachment (Speed Ball)
• Foam Brush 1”
• 12” Paper cutter (Friskars)
• Monoadhesive (Tombo)
• Mauve 5/8” Organdy (Really Reasonable Ribbon)
• Ό’ Silver Ribbon (Really Reasonable Ribbon)
• Ό” hand held punch (Fiskars)
• Shipping tags (Avery)
• Metal glue (Memory Makers)

Instructions for 12 x 12 scrapbook Page

1.    Take the 1” foam brush and cut the tip to look like it has jagged edges. Dip newly cut foam brush in sky color paint and randomly apply to background of a 12” x 12” piece of navy blue cardstock. I just brushed across it imparting a pleasing distressed, weathered look. Do as much or as little as you like.  Let dry, then cut Ό“ off each edge.  You may want to also distress another 8 ½” x 11” navy blue at this time for later use.

2.    Take one piece of mauve background paper and attach the distressed navy blue to it so that 1/ 4” shows on all sides behind the blue.

3.    Take another piece of 12”x 12 “ piece of mauve background paper and cut five 1” x 12 “ strips. Attach to card stock vertically.

4.    Using the Ό” strips left from trimming the painted navy blue paper, cut small pieces and attach randomly to the mauve strips; set aside.

5.    Cut three pieces of white cardstock to 4 ½” x 6 ½.“ Paint with foam brush and scrapbook paint. You can paint solid or use a distress method – I used a little of both.  Let them dry thoroughly.

6.    Pour the asphalt scrapbook paint into a plastic container that will fit your brayer. Using the foam attachment, roll in paint and brayer over Serenity stamp (not too thick – test it on scratch paper till you have the amount you want), and then stamp on painted cardstock. Repeat process for the “woman of beauty stamp” let them both dry thoroughly.

7.    Attach photo to solid blue painted US white Cardstock and attach to top of page in center.

8.    Cut two pieces mauve scrapbook paper 5” x 7” for matting both pictures. Attach them with mono adhesive – attach to page.

9.    Using the double circle punch cut six large squares out of navy blue prepared card stock and six smaller squares of the mauve patterned paper. Use monoadhesive to layer. Stamp letters on the top.

10.                       Using double circle punch cut one large circle out of prepared navy blue card stock and five from the mauve paper with the smaller circle. Layer one small circle on the one large one. Punch hole, add silver ribbon and crumple the ends.

11.                       Take the four metal-rimmed tags, punch out the center, and layer on the mauve circles using metal glue. Stamp as desired on the mauve, and attach to page.

Instructions for card:

1.    Cut Distressed Navy blue card stock to 7” x 11” and fold in half.

2.    Cut mauve background paper to 5 ½” x 4 ½ “.

3.    Paint the Ultra smooth card stock the same as for scrapbook page and stamp the same. With the serenity stamp and the asphalt paint.

4.    Attach stamped cardstock to mauve mat and then to navy cardstock.

5.    Cut piece of navy blue cardstock 3” x 1 Ό” cut mauve paper to 1” x 2 Ύ” layer. Stamp sentiment on the mauve using the asphalt scrapbook paint.  Attach to the bottom of the card.

6.    Punch large square out of the prepared navy card stock and a smaller square out of the mauve paper using the double punch.

7.    Brayer over the face of the stamp with asphalt and stamp on the mauve paper.  Adhere to larger square and attach to card fitting in to match “like a puzzle piece” to spotlight just her face and upper trunk.

8.    Cut ribbon and tie in knot or bow.
