Instructions:

Remember last month I said you’d be seeing more of my Planner pages? Well here’s April! Antique Crackling is one of my all time favorite techniques. Watching the paint crackle never ceases to amaze me. If you haven’t tried this yet, I hope these instructions will show you how easy it is and inspire you to do so.

(*Note: For more information on the size and source of my book, refer back to the March calendar page – Versamark Resist technique).

 Instructions

1.                Print calendar from desired source. I used Printable Calendars (http://www.printable-calendar.com/) since they were a good size to fit on my page. Before printing, I added birthdays and holidays; you may do this by hand or on the computer. Highlight special days with small rectangle shadow stamp from Rugged Shadows stamp set using dark blue ink, off stamping once to give you a lighter image. Trim with paper trimmer as closely to edges as possible leaving room for matting. Mat with dark blue cardstock positioning calendar close to top of mat.

2.                Stamp desired birds using Pueblo chalk ink on top left and bottom right corners of calendar.

3.                Stamp feathers using dark blue ink on top of part of right background page, making sure to continue stamping an image several times without re-inking for depth. Glue calendar to right page aligning at bottom.

4.                Cut 3”x7” piece of white cardstock from scraps. Stamp same feathers with dark blue ink, off stamping first making a lighter image for “NOTES” tag. Mat tag with tan cardstock leaving ¼” border. Cut 1”x2” piece from dark blue cardstock and fold in half; glue to top of “NOTES” tag. Punch hole and thread fiber.

5.                Stamp 3 feathers on white scrap cardstock using dark blue ink and cut out. Arrange on bottom left corner of calendar and glue. Cut about a 2” square from burlap – cut in half diagonally resulting in two triangles. Attach to upper left corner and bottom right corner with Extreme Eyelets.

6.                You can make a “bleach pad” from either folded paper towels or folded felt. I used paper towels for this project. Place folded paper towels in a container (I used a plate) and pour a bit of bleach on them. Use just enough bleach so the paper towels are wet but not too juicy. “Ink” feather stamps using the “bleach pad” and randomly stamp onto dark blue cardstock filling background. (*Note: Different cardstocks will react differently to bleach. You’ll have to experiment to see what colors your cardstock will bleach. Example: some black cardstocks will bleach to a purple color, others will turn brown, still others will bleach to a gray.)

7.                Cut two 3” squares from muslin. Ink large square shadow stamp from Background Builders with dark blue ink and stamp onto each piece. Ink two of the smaller bird stamps with Pueblo chalk ink and stamp on top of the blue square image. Fray all edges of muslin squares. Attach to bleach stamped background using brads.

8.                Attach bleached stamp background to left page of calendar. Cut a 1”x9-7/8” strip of tan cardstock and glue to long edge of 4 ¼”x 9-7/8” piece of dark blue cardstock leaving about a ¼” border. Cut about a 3 ½” x 9-7/8” piece of burlap and attach to dark blue strip using Extreme Eyelets.

9.                NOW, it’s time for the Antique Crackling! Paint white cardboard slide mounts with brown acrylic paint – let dry. Paint a generous amount of Crackle medium over the brown paint and leave to dry just until tacky. (*Note: This can take varying times. The thicker the coat, the longer it will take. After you’ve done this a couple of times, it will be easier to tell if it’s tacky just by looking at it. If you wait until the medium is too dry, it won’t crackle very much at all.)  When crackle medium is tacky, paint tan acrylic paint over top in smooth even strokes. Have plenty of paint on your paintbrush because you want to cover the Crackle medium with one stroke if possible. In other words, you don’t want to go back and forth over the same areas with multiple strokes. Once the slide mount is completely painted with tan paint, just sit back and watch the magic! It may take an hour or so to dry completely.

10.           When slide mounts are dry cut small bird pictures into 1-7/8” squares and glue to the backs. Stamp 3 eggs from “All Things of Nature” set with dark blue ink and cut out. Glue third slide mount to left side of burlap – arrange eggs and glue them down. Glue one bird picture to the right of the slide mount with eggs, and the other bird picture to the bottom right of the calendar.
